The husks produce a mucilage, that when mixed with water, turn into a colorless gel. When water is added, it increases the bulk by tenfold. Used as a dietary fiber, it helps clean out the bowels and maintain health. The herb is not able to be absorbed by the intestines, so its job is to absorb excess moisture while stimulating normal bowel elimination.

Psyllium seed is primarily sold and marketed as a dietary fiber supplement. Its fiber is 47 percent soluble and 53 percent insoluble, which adds bulk to the stool and creates a healthy balance of bacteria in the colon and intestines when taken regularly as a dietary supplement. Psyllium seeds help to lower cholesterol, control diabetes and aids in controlling appetite and weight.
